Keeping Your Memories in Spiritual Journals

I recently made a piece of art about my memories. I like how I can capture my memories on a canvas. It's a powerful experience for me. I don't stop there, though. I also use my spiritual journal for keeping memories. I use both words and pictures to remember my past and the present.

I probably won't be able to convince everyone that they can capture their memories on a canvas. I have a better shot, though, at convincing others that their memories can be captured in a spiritual journal. Most of us can use words to write down our thoughts and feelings. Most people are willing to do so in a private place like a spiritual journal. The idea that we can keep track of our memories on paper is widely accepted. Although, it is not an idea that is employed by most and I want to help change that.

While I am writing, I am asking myself why I care if people keep their memories in a spiritual journal. Why do I spend so much time trying to get people to find a way to remember? I think it's because of what I think about the power of remembering. Remembering the good things has the power to bring me joy, peace and hope. Remembering the hard things helps me make sense of my past and it helps me learn from my past. Looking back on my life shows me how God has been present in the most unexpected places. I want people to experience the power of spiritual journaling because of the wonderful power it has had in my life.

Keeping a spiritual journal has changed my life in endless and mysterious ways. I want others to experience spiritual journaling as I have experienced it. I don't want you, or anyone else, to miss out on the chance to keep their memories as I have kept mine.

Do you keep a spiritual journal? Are you considering keeping one? Do you have any ideas to share that will help us all keep track of our memories? Do you use art, scrap booking, photography or some other art form to collect the pieces of your past, present and future? Consider sharing with us. We'd like to know your thoughts and inspirations. Together, maybe we can inspire someone to join us as memory keepers. Maybe they won't share here, but they might open the pages of a private journal and find some joy and peace. Maybe you and I can be a part of that.

Tears for Dancing, Age 42

The older I get the less I think about what I can get out of this life. Bad things happen here on Earth and no one is immune. I see my parents suffering, I watch terrible things happen to my friends and I see catastrophic events that create hell on Earth. Revelation 21:4 promises that someday God will wipe every tear from our eyes and the old order of things will pass away. I’m beginning to think that this promise isn’t so far away: it’s just waiting for us at the next stop. Maybe when we die we trade our tears for dancing and enter Heaven. Until then, I'm going to paint, I'm going to write, and I'm going to share when I find hope in this life. That's why I'm here at Journey on Canvas.
