Today I'll Be Using Art to Heal

Today is kinda a down day. I just want to eat every carb I can get my hands on. My head is stuffed up, I’m sluggish and I’m fighting the desire to go back to bed. I’m at odds with someone I love very much and it’s getting at me on every level: physical, emotional and spiritual. I need to heal and get a new perspective. If I just sit in it I’ll be in the same mess I’m in right now when tomorrow comes. Somehow I need to pull out of it. What can I do?

Well, so far eating hasn’t done the trick. At some point today I’ll have to go for a run; that always helps some. I could write in my journal and that will help me sort out some of my emotions. A hot shower will bring momentary comfort. A little yoga will relax me. Definitely need to set aside some time to pray. Or, I could scrap all of these things and get out my paints and get to work on a new canvas. I could paint about where I’m at today and add a little of where I’d like to be tomorrow. I could add a dash of my present sadness and mix it with the glimpses of hope God has given me for the future. I could offer up my painting as a prayer and consider it my latest journal entry. The comfort of making art today will likely be greater than the momentary comfort of a hot shower. Maybe, when I’m finished, I won’t even need to go running to pull myself out of this funk. Maybe making some art is exactly what I need to heal today. Even the thought of getting started has lifted my spirits.
Anyone out there feeling like I feel today? Maybe you should pick up a paintbrush, make a sketch or create a new page for your scrapbook? Do you have a creative outlet? If you do, consider using it today in order to heal. Then come back and share your creation with us. More importantly, let us know how you used art to help you heal.

Telling Our Story:

Our life is a gift for others!

I want to give Emily desire even more than I desire her to paint. It’s the desire to share her story that I really want to give to her. It’s her story that has the real power. Painting just helps her tell it. Maybe Emily will tell her story, but she’ll tell it differently than I have? Maybe she won’t paint but she’ll still find another way to give her story a voice? Then her life could touch people, reach out to them and encourage. That would make her life a gift for others. I’d be so incredibly proud.
